It is the wisdom and kindness of Allaah that for the Shi’a of Imaam Husain (as) – the Master of all the Martyrs, He begins the New Hijri Year not with the pomp and splendour but with the grief and mourning. It begins with the remembrance of the Martyrdom of Imaam Husain (as) with his companions in Karbala. Every community celebrates their respective New Year with zeal and celebrations. For us, with the Maatam and mourning on Imaam Husain (as), our New Hijri Year injects a new life into us. It is a fact that an energetic and loud cry of a newborn is a sign of health, so does the Maatam and mourning gives a new life to our Soul. It is easy to laugh at any small thing but, indeed, very difficult to weep or
mourn on the hair raising events of Karbala just by imagination. It is the Barkat and Rahmat of Allaah on them who are able to wet their eyes and weep on Imaam Husain (as) and the events of Karbala.
On the Day of Aashuraa, all the creations of Allaah – jinn, birds, animals, trees, stones, stars, land, sky etc. mourned on the Masaa’ib (hardships and sufferings) of Imaam Husain (as). Imaam Ali Zayn ul-Aabedeen (as) and the following A’immat (as) have remembered the torture inflicted upon the Ahl ul-Bayt (as) in the Karbala and they have wept and mourned and also encouraged the mumineen to do it in the Majlis. This practice is followed since then. Du’aat ul-Akrameen (aq) in their respective periods composed Marsiyah, Nauha and Salaam in Arabic, Persian, Udru and Lisaan ud-Da’wat, portraying the whole account of Karbala and its aftermath. They used to recite it in the Majlis of Imaam Husain (as) in Moharram ul-Haraam and were so touching and stirring that mumineen used to weep to their contentment. Among them, collections of Saiyedna Badruddin Hasan bin Wali (aq) and Saiyedna Fakhruddin Jivabhai bin Saiyedna Ameeruddin (aq) – Diwaan-e-Hasan and Diwaan-e-Haseen, are outstanding. Selected Marsiyah and compositions from them are still recited in the Majlis.
Majlis loses its charm if it is void of Zikr of Imaam Husain (as). The practice of assembling Majlis in the way it is done now in the Moharram ul-Haraam, dates back to the time of Saiyedna Ameeruddin Saheb (aq), some 140 yrs ago. The credit of establishing the discipline of Majlis goes to him. Mumineen used to take Ta’leem (used to learn) of reciting Marsiyah (Zaakiri) in the Majlis from him. He initiated the art of doing Zaakiri in the Majlis. Even Huzoor-e-Aali (tus), in his youth, has done distinguished and illustrious Khidmat of Zaakiri. He was known for his high pitched voice and mumineen still recollects his melodious rhythm and flawless art of presentation in the Majlis. The enthusiasm is still alive in him. Huzoor-e-Aali (tus) instructed us to record a Salaam written by S. Fakhruddin saheb (aq) of Imaam Husain (as) in his voice and include it in the CD so that the mumineen reminisce his golden past of Zaakiri.
Art changes its form with the passing time. Same is true for the Zaakiri. Good olden ways of reciting the Marsiyah, Salaam, Nauha and Qaseedah have taken a new form. We intended to protect that legacy by recording those compositions recited in its original way by the selected Zaakereen (one who recites) of the Da’wat. Also, mumineen who are not able to attend the Majlis of Moharram ul-Haraam would be able to listen to the Marsiyah in their homes on various occasions. We have distributed the CDs of Qasaa’id-e-Maulaana Ali Ameer ul-Mumineen (as), the Abyaat collection of Saiyedna Fakhruddin Saheb (aq) and the Nauha of Ahl ul-Bayt (as) in the past two years among the mumineen who have given us an excellent feedback. Following the tradition, we will distribute the CDs of the Marsiyah of Ahl ul-Bayt (as) named as “Khazeenat ul-Huzne wal Bukaa” in Moharram ul-Haraam 1431 AH.
Mumineen should acquire the CD at the earliest from the address given below. Listening to the account of Karbala and the mourning on the sufferings of the Ahl ul-Bayt (as) is equal to attending the Majlis of Imaam Husain (as). Mumineen should do Maatam in whatever way they could. It is one of the best of Good Deeds because Rasoolullaah (saws) has said ‘For the one who does it achieve the Reward of Jannat.
