Riwaayaat and Explanation from our beloved Imaam

Maulana Imaam Ja'far us-Saadiq (as) said: The believer may pray the namaaz of eclipse at any time when it actually occurs. The prayers for the eclipse of sun ( kusoof ush-Shams ) and that of moon ( khusoof ul-Qamar ) are same, except that the prayer for the eclipse of the sun is comparatively longer in duration. When there was an eclipse of the sun or the moon Mohammad Rasoolullaah (SAWS) would instruct believers to hasten towards the mosques for prayer and recitation of the Qur'an. Neither the azaan nor the iqaamat should be said before this namaaz, but the people should be notified of the congregational prayer. It is necessary to pray during the tremor, or an earthquake, or high winds, or darkness, or an unusual natural phenomenon in the same way as the namaaz of eclipse is offered.

Maulana Imaam Ja'far us-Saadiq (as) said: The prayer of eclipse cannot be said after the event. When a believer is offering the prayer of eclipse and there comes the proper time for farz namaaz and if he is apprehensive that in continuing the prayer of eclipse the time of the farz namaaz will end, then he should delay the former and first offer the farz namaaz . If he is sure that in offering the prayer of eclipse the time of farz namaaz will not get affected then he should complete the former and then offer the obligatory prayer.

Procedure of the Namaaz during Eclipse in Detail

Maulana Imaam Ja'far us-Saadiq (as) said: The prescribed prayer at the time of any heavenly event is one and the same. It comprises of ten qiyaam (standing), ten rukoo' (bowing) and four sajadah (prostration). The namaaz should commence with niyyat and takbeeratul ihraam ; surat ul-Faateha should be recited loudly in every qiyaam with another lengthy surat . After saying ‘allaaho akbar' a believer should bow and remain bowing for as long as the time taken in the qiyaam. Then while saying ‘allaaho akbar' he should rise for the second qiyaam and recite a lengthy surat with Faateha in descending order. After recitation he should make qunoot and then say ‘allaaho akbar' and bow for the second time, he should remain bowing for as long as the time taken for recitation in the second qiyaam.

Then while saying ‘allaaho akbar' he should stand for the third time and recite the surat in descending order with Faateha and then bow for the third time and remain in the same position as he did before. Then he should raise his head while saying ‘allaaho akbar' and stand for the fourth qiyaam and recite a lengthy surat with Faateha in descending order. After recitation he should make qunoot and then say ‘allaaho akbar' and bow for the fourth time, he should remain bowing for as long as the time taken for recitation in the qiyaam. Then while saying ‘allaaho akbar' he should stand for the fifth time and recite the surat in descending order with Faateha and then bow accordingly and when he rises from it, he should say ‘same'allaaho leman hamedah, allaaho akbar , and then prostrate. He should continue prostration for as long as the time taken in the qiyaam. Then he should sit, do supplication and then again prostrate for the second time in the same way as that of first.

Then, he should do sixth qiyaam while saying allaaho akbar, and repeat the same procedure in the remaining five qiyaam as he did earlier i.e. five bowing and two prostration. After the fourth prostration he should sit for long tashahhud and send salawaat-o-salaam. The du'a of qunoot should be said after the Qur'anic recitation of 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th qiyaam. The du'a ‘same'allaaho leman hamedah, allaaho akbar , should only be uttered after the 5th and 10th bowing. If anyone forgets or cannot recite the du'a of qunoot properly then he can recite the du'a of "Allaahumma inna nahmadoka".

Niyyat and Du'a

Niyyat for Wuzoo: “Allahumma inni nawayto haza tahoori le salaate kusoof ish-Shamse (Solar Eclipse) OR le salaate khusoof il-Qamare (Lunar Eclipse) OR daf'e aafaat is-Samaawaate (Other heavenly calamities) wale kulle salaatin usallihaa.”

Niyyat for namaaz: “Usalli salaata le Kusoof ish-Shamse OR le Khusoof il-Qamare OR le daf'e aafaat is-Samaawaate ‘ashara raka'aatin wa arba'a sajadaatin lillaahe azza wa jalla adaa'an mustaqbelal ka'batil haraame mo'tamman Allaho Akbar.”

Dua' of Qunoot: “Laa ilaaha illallaahul haleemul kareem. Laa ilaaha illallaahul aliyul azeem. Subhaana rabbis samaawaatis sab'e wal arzeenas sab'e wama fihinna wama baynahunna wa rabbil arshil azeem. Wal hamdo lillaahe rabbil aalameen allazi laysa kamislehi shayun. Allaahumma salle alaa Mohammadin wa alaa aale Mohammadin wa baarik wa sallim.”

Translation: There is no God but Allaah, the most gentle, the most generous. There is no God but Allaah, the most sublime, the most great. M agnificence is for the Lord of seven heavens and seven lands and what is in it and what is in-between and the Lord of the great Throne. All Praise is due to Allaah the Lord of all universes with whom nothing can be compared. O Allah, send blessings upon Mohammad and his progeny, O Allah bestow His blessings and bounty upon Mohammad Rasoolullaah (SAWS).
