One day Rasoolullaah (saws) along with his Ashaab (companions) passed by an old woman whose name was Umm-e-Ma’bad. Though old by age, she was very strong physically. She had set up a tent and would sit at the door. She was very benevolent and generous. She would offer food and water to any traveller who used to pass by her tent.
When Rasoolullaah (saws) and his Ashaab came across her tent, he asked her for some milk or dates. Umm-e-Ma’bad replied, ‘O Rasoolullaah (saws)! My son has taken the goats for grazing, so at the moment, I do not have any milk.’ Rasoolullaah (saws) saw a goat sitting nearby her tent and inquired about it. Umm-e-Ma’bad replied, ‘O Rasoolullaah (saws)! This goat is very weak, it cannot walk. Its skin has stuck to its bones. It cannot give milk because of its weakness.’ Rasoolullaah (saws) asked Umm-e-Ma’bad to bring the goat to him. He also requested her to bring a vessel big enough to suffice them all.
When she brought the goat and the vessel, Rasoolullaah (saws) rubbed his hand on the goat’s head, and it started giving milk; till the vessel was full. Rasoolullaah (saws) told his Ashaab to drink the milk. Then the goat gave milk for the second time and he asked them to drink it again. Then Rasoolullaah (saws) asked Umm-e-Ma’bad whether she had any dates. She replied that, the date tree had dried up due to scarcity of water. Rasoolullaah (saws) asked her whether she had any water. She replied, ‘O Rasoolullaah (saws)! There is very little water in this pot, because this year water is scarce.’ He asked her to bring the pot, and then rinsed his mouth in the pot and poured that water on the stem of that date tree. Instantly the tree became lush green and started bearing fruit. Such was the Miracle and the Barakat of the Du’aa of Rasoolullaah (saws).
Then, Rasoolullaah (saws) blessed Umm-e-Ma’bad saying that, “May Allaah Ta’aala increase your wealth ten times.” Then he continued on his journey. When Umm-e-Ma’bad’s husband returned, he was surprised to see the green date tree and inquired about it. She narrated what happened. On listening to the Miracle of Rasoolullaah (saws), he embraced Islaam on the hands of Rasoolullaah (saws). He went to meet him and presented many gifts to him. Umm-e-Ma’bad became very wealthy. Such was the Barakat and Blessing of Rasoolullaah (saws) that when anyone fell ill, she brought him close to the tree, or fed him the dates, and the person was cured.
When Rasoolullaah (saws) passed away, the tree lost its freshness. Its fruits lost sweetness. When Maulaana Ali (as) was martyred, the tree stopped bearing fruits. When Imaam Hasan (as) was killed, its leaves fell off and when Imaam Husain (as) was martyred, the tree fell down and the blood gushed out from it.
When Umm-e-Ma’bad saw the tree, she complained – O Allaah Ta’aala, what a great calamity has befallen Islaam! When the night fell, someone wailed near the tree, “Yaa Rasoolullaah”, “Yaa Ali”, “Yaa Faatemah”, “Yaa Hasan”, “Yaa Husain”, “Yaa Shohadaa-e-Karbalaa”. Then some unseen person replied, “Yaa Husain”, “Yaa Husain”. After few days, the news of Imaam Husain (as)’s Shahaadat reached the people there. They all gathered and did the Maatam of Imaam Husain (as).
This riwaayat clearly indicates the Fazeelat-merit of al-Khamsat ul-Athaar (as). It proves that every creation of this World has given witness or testified the Nubuwat of Rasoolullaah (saws) by obeying his commands. Indeed for them, obeying the commands of Rasoolullaah (saws) is the cause of Najaat and Shafaa’at.
